Instructors

Tom Wyles

Tom Wyles, Commando fitness InstructorAt the age of 16 I joined the Royal Marines and undertook 30 weeks of arduous Commando Training, culminating in the Commando tests and a 30 mile weighted run. Upon completing training I was based with 45Cdo in Scotland and carried out duties in various countries including: Oman, America, Norway, Northern Ireland, Afghanistan and Brunei. During my time in the Marines I specialised in Reconnaissance and Sniping.

I left the Marines in 2006 and trained as a close protection operative and Medic in South Africa. The Medic training was outstanding including working as a front line paramedic in the townships of Cape Town. This training proved its worth when I gained a contract to work in Iraq as a close protection operator and team Medic responsible for the emergency care of 12 team members.

After leaving Iraq I qualified as a commercially endorsed Yacht master and Cruising Instructor. Then I had some time off to travel the world and experience different cultures. During this time I also had some fun teaching English at a school in Vietnam, white water rafting down the Zambezi, surfing in Australia and competing in the Honolulu Marathon before going on to qualify as a Personal Trainer gaining a Master certificate.

I like to keep pushing myself, as I like my clients to do too. I have competed in several events including the London Marathon (completed in 3 hours 25 minutes), Paris marathon (3 hours 11 minutes) and tried my hand at triathlons. I have completed a number of triathlons from Sprint distance to an Ironman, where I impressed myself with a time of 11 hours 26 minutes.

Health and Fitness is a huge part of my life.  I feel I have proved to myself that if you want something enough and you are willing to put in the required time and dedication you will achieve it. My mission is to inspire and instil the self confidence and self belief so that you can excel in reaching your own goals.

Rob Woods

Rob Woods, Commando Fitness Bottcamp InstructorAfter training as a ski instructor, I joined the Marines in 2003. I have taken part in many multi - national exercises including West Africa , Norway and America and have served my country multiple times in Afghanistan and Iraq .  I have represented the Marines at numerous sports, including Football, Rugby , Skiing and Cross Country Running.

As Corporal I have had the responsibility of assessing the ability (both physical and mentally) of the candidates wanting to join the Royal Marines.  In 2011 I passed the PTI (Physical Training Instructor) course and now train new recruits.

With my experience of instruction and mentoring in many different situations, I feel incredibly well equipped to enable all Commando Fitness members to reach their fitness goal.

Stephen Lawton

Stephen Lawton, Bootcamp InstructorMy military career started with 5 years in the Army Royal Logistics Corps.  At the age of 25 I decided to join the Royal Marines.  After completing 32 weeks Royal Marine training I was drafted to Fleet Protection Group in Scotland where the troops core task is to protect nuclear weapon convoys.

I have now joined ‘ECP’ Enhance Counter Piracy Troop. On completion of this very tactical and demanding course which included close quarters shooting, roping down out of helicopters and climbing ladders to secure ships all shapes and sizes, I was deployed to the Arabian Gulf on Counter Piracy operations. After completing this tour of duty I was then deployed to Haiti on the humanitarian aid mission.

When I’m not away I enjoy hill walking/climbing, golf and snow boarding.  I really enjoy being a Commando Fitness instructor as I can watch people improve and achieve things they never thought possible.  All of the groups work hard no matter what their fitness ability and everyone has fun doing so.
